Ground?Based Magnetometer Response to Impacting Magnetosheath Jets

چکیده

Localized dynamic pressure pulses in the magnetosheath, or jets, have been a popular topic for discussion recent decades. Studies show that they can propagate through magnetosheath and impact magnetopause, possibly showing up as geoeffective elements at ground level. However, questions still remain on how be. Previous studies limited to case during few days with only handful of events. In this study we found 65 cases impacting jets using observations from Multiscale Magnetospheric mission 2015–2017. We examine their geoeffectiveness ground-based magnetometers (GMAGs). From our statistics find GMAGs observe responses fluctuations geomagnetic field amplitudes 34 nT, frequencies 1.9 mHz, damping times 370 s. Further, parallel length maximum jet dictate amplitude observed GMAG response. Longer higher inducing larger horizontal components. The median time required signal be detected by is 190 also if harmful human infrastructure cannot exclude such events could exist.

Viscoelasticity breaks the symmetry of impacting jets.

A jet of a Newtonian liquid impacting on a wall at right angle spreads as a thin liquid sheet which preserves the radial symmetry of the jet. We report that for a viscoelastic jet (solution of polyethylene glycol in water) this symmetry can break; close to the wall, the jet cross section becomes faceted and radial steady liquid films (wings) form, which connect the cross-section vertices to the...

Geoeffective jets impacting the magnetopause are very common

The subsolar magnetosheath is penetrated by transient enhancements in dynamic pressure. These enhancements, also called high-speed jets, can propagate to the magnetopause, causing large-amplitude yet localized boundary indentations on impact. Possible downstream consequences of these impacts are, e.g., local magnetopause reconnection, impulsive penetration of magnetosheath plasma into the magne...

High Energy Jets in the Earth’s Magnetosheath: Implications for Plasma Dynamics and Anomalous Transport

593 The region downstream of a supercritical collisionless shock, the magnetosheath (MSH), is known to be in a highly disturbed turbulent state [1–3]. The undisturbed solar wind (SW) streams with supermagnetosonic velocity V > c ms at a magnetosonic Mach number up to M ms ~ 15. At the Earth’s bow shock (BS), the SW decelerates to Mach numbers M ms < 1, thermalizes, and, when entering the MSH, i...

On the generation of magnetosheath high-speed jets by bow shock ripples

[1]The terrestrial magnetosheath is embedded with coherent high-speed jets of about 1RE in scale, predominantly during quasi-radial interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). When these high dynamic pressure (Pdyn) jets hit the magnetopause, they cause large indentations and further magnetospheric effects. The source of these jets has remained controversial. One of the proposed mechanisms is based on...
